Food waste occurs at every stage along the journey from paddock to plate. Australians waste 7.6 million tonnes of food every year, making it is a challenge too big to tackle alone. Industry-wide and systemic change is needed for Australia to reach the goal of halving food waste by 2030, and for all Australians to experience the resulting environmental, economic, and social benefits.
Momentum is growing, with many governments, businesses and people taking action on food waste. However, we know we can get further, faster when we work together.
Stop Food Waste Australia is uniquely positioned to lead industry-wide change by leveraging our extensive relationships with food businesses, industry bodies and government to take a whole-of-sector view on food waste solutions.
Together with industry, we are:
- Identifying food waste “hotspots” – areas of food waste where we can target highest impact change.
- Developing unique, workable priority areas that are specific to the sector
- Sharing food waste solutions to maximise food recovery, reduce food waste and share the multitude of benefits.
Some sectors will focus on a specific commodity such as dairy or meat. Others will examine a supply chain stage, such as Hospitality or Institutions. Cutting across these are the two initial Sector Action Plans for Food Rescue and Food Cold Chain.
