
A snapshot of farm waste in Australia
Australian agriculture, fisheries and forestry generated an estimated 16.3 million tonnes* of pre-farm gate waste, comprising:

16.1 million tonnes of organic material (mostly used beneficially on-farm)

97,500 tonnes of plastic material (estimate includes agriculture and forestry, not fisheries)

159,000 tonnes of workshop material (estimate includes some but not all workshop waste materials).
*Figures based on 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) production data with refined modelling in 2025, following discussions with producers, industry bodies and waste experts.
